Description:
Usability testing is straight forward. You find a user or two (or 8), put them in front of the design, have them execute a task or two, take some notes, write a quick report, and you're done! That's all there is to it, right?

Not quite. It turns out there are many different ways to conduct usability research.
In this presentation, Christine Perfetti will show you some methods you've probably never heard of -- techniques only practiced by the most adventuresome usability professionals.

Among the techniques you'll learn about:

  • 5-Second tests: A popular low-tech technique to collect quick feedback on whether a screen or page's purpose is clear to the user.
  • Inherent-value tests: A two-phase test that explores the value loyal customers find in a product or service.
  • Category Agreement Analysis: An alternative to traditional card sorting
  • Catalog-based tests: Perfect for organizations migrating offline content to the web
  • Interview-based tasks: An improvisational approach to task design where the participant and facilitator create the tasks together during the test session

Christine will share her experience with these techniques and discuss how you can perform them yourself.
